O devět měsíců později je Santee odsouzen za vraždu policisty. Během převozu se ho pokusí podplacení policisté zabít. Santeemu se však podaří ubránit a uprchnout. Rozjíždí se pátrání po uprchlíkovi, v jehož čele stojí šerif Cepeda. Santee se zmocní rukojmí, půvabné Rity Merrickové a v jejím terénním voze uprchne do pouště. Velení pátrací akce se ujímají detektivové Severance a Rudisill. Byli to oni, kdo zavraždili policistu a potom zatkli nevinného Santeeho. Policejní uniformy totiž ukrývají nebezpečné vůdce gangu, obchodujícího s drahými automobily. Také se ukáže, že Santeeho rukojmí je ve skutečnosti zástupkyně šerifa Cepedy.".
